SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION OF THE NOMINEE / APPLICANT

Achievement
Dr S. S. Jha is Honorary Chief Consultant and emeritus orthopaedic surgeon at Bharat Vikas Viklang Punarvas Kendra and Sanjay Anand Viklang Hospital cum Research Centre, Patna since the last 10 years. To date, more than 30,000 artificial support and more than 7,778 Polio and Corrective Surgery executed from this centre under his leadership. This service is free of cost and the mission of this centre is to eradicate physically challenged problems from Bihar. The mission of the centre is “21st-century Viklang Mukta Bihar”. Apart from this Dr Jha has operated on more than 29,000 Polio and other Corrective Surgery free of cost. His passion was spotted by lifeline express which utilized his services for operating on the physically challenged patients whenever the train was stationed in Bihar at Muzaffarpur and Hajipur. 

 He has been the founder trustee of Ramjanam Sulakshana Pandey Cancer Hospital, Ranchi and has also been associated with the inception of Mahavir Arogya Sansthan and Mahavir Vaatsalya Aspatal, Patna. He also served Rotary as Chairman Polio Plus Committee of Bihar & Jharkhand, Rotary Club District-3250. He rendered services free Santhal Paharia Seva Mandal, Deoghar. Every month visit to Madhupur for free operation of Physically Challenged people and became the first surgeon in Bihar & Jharkhand to start limb lengthening surgery. Deeply associated with Sri Krishna Pranami Seva Samiti, he did operate in the surgical camps for physically challenged persons at Panna, Ranchi, Giridih, Daltonganj, Patna, Kanpur, Varanasi, Haridwar, Panipat, Delhi, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Panna, Birganj and Kathmandu, etc. Honourable President of India, Sri Ram Nath Kovind as the then Governor of Bihar inaugurated a Swasthya Mela on 29th July 2016 at Mahavir Vaatsalya Aspatal, Patna. 

AWARDS / RECOGNITION RECEIVED BY THE APPLICANT / NOMINEE 

State Award : Deoki Nandan Mathur Memorial Viklang Seva Samman Ratna, 2013.

Maithili Seva Samman by Maithili Lok Sanskritik Mandal, 2015.

State Bank of India Award, 2013 for outstanding work done under Polio free programme in India and Nepal. He was awarded a cheque of Rs. One Lakh which he donated to Manav Seva Samiti, Darbhanga which is working for the downtrodden people of the society.

Shree Sunder Singh Bhandari, the then Governor Of Bihar had appreciated his works done for the welfare of humanity. 

National Award:-
Lifetime achievement award for surgical correction of physically challenged persons & felicitation at Sri Krishna Pranami Viklang Seva Samiti with an award of Rs. 30,000/- (Thirty thousand).

Certificate of appreciation during a conference on “Current concepts of Joint Replacement Surgery at Gurukripa Jagriti Hospital and Research Center Limited, Allahabad in 2008.

Felicitated for delivering a guest lecture at the Indian Orthopaedic Association conference at Bhubaneshwar in 2009.

Lifetime achievement award in 2010 by U. P. Arthroplasty Course and appointed Patron of Cownpore Arthroplasty Course.

Lifetime achievement award for serving “P. G. Update” as an advisor in 2012.

Felicitation with a citation on delivering “Dr B B Joshi Oration” on correction of polio deformed foot at the joint conference of 2nd Asia-Pacific Society for Foot and Ankle Surgery and Indian Foot and Ankle Society at Agra in 2012. 

Felicitated with “Vishisth Purush Samman” by Rashtriya Chintak Manch, South Patliputra Colony during its 20th Foundation Day for significant contribution in health section in 2013.

Lifetime achievement award after completing 5 years as Charter President of Indian Orthopaedic Rheumatology Association and appointed Patron of this society in 2013.

IMPACT OF THE WORK DONE BY THE NOMINEE / APPLICANT

Contribution to the field:

Associated from the initial stages, he was secretary and president of the Indian Foot & Ankle Society for many years. He organized the 3rd Asia CIP International Conference on the lower leg, ankle and foot deformities at Patna in 1998 as Organising Secretary. He presented his paper “CALCANEUS deformity and its correction by peroneal sling tenodesis”. This surgical correction was the solution to an unsolved deformity of the foot known as CALCANEUS FOOT. This paper was acknowledged as a new technique. He was honoured to chair a scientific session in the 1st Triennial international Federation of foot and ankle societies scientific meeting at Kyoto, Japan in 2002.

Dr Jha was also invited as a faculty and to chair a scientific session at 1st Asia-Pacific Society for Foot and Ankle Surgery at Chongquing, China in 2011 where he was selected as Vice Secretary-General of this society. 

In 2012, Dr Jha became the international coordinator for the society’s 2nd conference at Agra, India. He also chaired a session and presented a scientific paper in the 3rd Asia-Pacific Society for Foot and Ankle Surgery in Hongkong 2015.

Presently, Patron of the Indian Orthopaedic Rheumatology Association, Dr Jha was instrumental in establishing this association and was initially president for five years. He was Chairman of the National P.G. Quiz Programme during Indian Orthopaedic Association Conference for five years.

Contribution to Society:
Six panchayats belonging to Patna Saheb became Viklang Mukta because of his selfless service.
94 camps of Polio & Corrective Surgery camp was held under his guidance at   Bharat Vikas Viklang Hospital, Pahari, Patna-Gaya Road, Patna. This service is continuously rendered by him.
